Measurements using distributed optical fibre sensing (DFOS) technique were performed by SHM System in the Faculty of Civil Engineering Laboratory at the Wrocław University of Technology. The results of strain measurements carried out in a geometrically continuous way over designed measurement traces will be used by the PhD students of this Faculty to develop their doctoral dissertations. So far, concrete elements (slabs and beams) have been analyzed, strengthened with composite materials, where the optical fibers has been used for searching cracks appeared during loading. In addition, strain measurements of a steel T-beam (type MCL) were made, which was bent successively at four points until yielding to obtain the appropriate curvature. In this case, one of the optical fibre was shaped along the edge of a steel teeth i.e. on a very irregular trace. Two optical fibers allowed for replacing aprox. 2,800 traditional strain gauges. Classical extensometers as well as photogrammetric techniques were used as reference measurement methods.
